Rogue Games, Inc. licenses Colonial Gothic to Mystical Throne Entertainment.
(Chicago) June 17, 2013
Rogue Games issued the first license today for its popular Colonial Gothic historical horror game. Mystical Throne Entertainment plans to create and publish a series of tabletop roleplaying adventures set in the world of Colonial Gothic.
The year is 1745. The lure of open land, religious freedom, and commercial opportunity prompts many to leave their homes in England for the North American colonies. Others cross the Atlantic for other reasons - reasons that would trouble both government and Church, if they but knew.
Beneath the everyday world lies a world of the unknown. Few suspect it exists, and fewer still have experienced it. It is whispered that Indian shamans can teach you many things if they deem you worthy. There are rumors of hidden treasures: relics of times long gone, holding unimaginable power. The hidden secrets of the universe, some say, dwell in hidden places surrounded by countless perils. Some of these accounts, to be sure, are no more than wild tales - but you know that not all are fables. You are determined to uncover the secrets of centuries past and harness their forgotten powers.
The way will not be easy, that much is certain. The New World holds many dangers: some threaten with tooth and claw and others with dark powers of unimaginable evil. And you are not the only ones searching. The Templars and the Freemasons struggle for control of the strings of government; witch-finders terrorize the guilty and innocent alike; native peoples fight to protect their lands and their way of life; and creatures out of nightmare stalk the dark woods and high mountains. But those who prevail will hold power enough to scorn kings and empires, and command wealth beyond reckoning. Those who prevail will have their hands upon the tiller of history.
This is the New World, and you aim to uncover its true secrets.
This is Colonial Gothic.
New World is a Colonial Gothic campaign based in New England in the mid-1700s. Newly arrived from England to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the player characters are relic hunters, adventurers, and esoteric scholars. The familiar lands of England hold few remaining secrets for delvers into the unknown, but the New World offers limitless possibilities. However, these unexplored and uncivilized lands of also offer danger in equal measure.
"I am very excited about the plan Aaron brought to us for the New World campaign," said Richard Iorio II, owner of Rogue Games. "Mystical Throne Entertainment is a first-rate company with a great reputation for quality products, and I am very happy to have them working on material for Colonial Gothic."
"I love alternate history settings, especially those that incorporate elements of fantasy and horror. When I first got my hands on Colonial Gothic, I knew I wanted to create a campaign for it someday." said Aaron T. Huss, owner of Mystical Throne Entertainment. "I'm a big fan of Rogue Games and am excited to be working with the Colonial Gothic license."

Things moving and cool things are in store
- March 5 at 7 PM, if you are on Google+, I will be taking part on the Dorkland Roundtable.
- As of today you are able to purchase Rogue Games PDFs at Shop d20 PFSRD.com, and you can see the PDFs here.
- Flames of Freedom: Shadows Upon the Hudson is underway. I’ve had to rewrite sections because I was not happy with them. I am shooting for a draft to be ready by the end of the month. It is going slower than I would like, and that is due to my wanting to out due what I’ve done before.
- Shadow, Sword & Spell: Companion is about 75% done. Once the massive draft is done, and I clean things up, I will put out a call for play testers. There are a lot of things in this book, and the more eyes I have on it, the better it will be. Companion is shaping up to be a book filled with options. There will be no way for players and gamemasters to use everything in it, but if you want options, you have them and more.
- Island of Mystery. This is a adventure I am writing for Shadow, Sword & Spell. The maps – rough – are done. It has been play tested. I just need to type this up and get this moving.
- Price of Curiosity. This is a adventure for Colonial Gothic that I am writing. This is not a high priority but it is something I am hoping to get done sooner rather than later.
- Website redesign. It is time, and it is slowly moving to the top of the list.
So there you go.
Comments, ideas, suggestions, and the like are always welcomed. Submissions for adventures and the like are welcomed as well.
Rogue Games Releases Colonial Gothic Second Edition

Available starting today Rogue Games is accepting pre-orders for Colonial Gothic: Rulebook Second Edition.
The North American Colonies.
The great nations of Europe struggle for control of the New World. Native Americans struggle for their land and their lives. Planters and traders struggle for wealth and position. A new nation struggles to be born.
But look beneath the surface.
Monsters stalk the woods. Angry ghosts and spiteful witches plague the villagers. Explorers search for lost cities and fabled treasures. Ancient evils are awakened.
There is a secret history, and this history deals with events that took place in the shadows. These events played a role in the history of the American colonies and the Revolution that few know about.
The truth is hidden, and plots are afoot. Events are moving behind the scenes, and lurking in the shadows are agents with their own agenda.
War is coming.
The Siege of Boston is lifted, and General Washington is leading the Continental Army to New York. The enemies are many, but as to who they are, you do not know.
Colonial Gothic is a supernatural historical horror roleplaying game set during the dawn of the American Revolution.
Over two years in the making, Colonial Gothic Second Edition is fully compatible with all previous Colonial Gothic adventures and sourcebooks.
You can preorder your copy today, and receive a copy of the PDF immediately. Within in two weeks, the book will be shipped to you. What better way to celebrate the end of the year, then with this game. You will want your copy, because what we have planned for next year is something special.

Counting down
On?
12/12/12 @12:12:12.
It is in final layout now. The editing is done, and Tom Cadorette (who is editing the work) has been looking over the PDF as each version is done. This has been, and will be, the best editing job we have had. It has been a joy to work with Tom, and I know we are looking forward to working on other projects together.
The playtesting has been finished for about a month, and this has been the most rewarding playtesting experience I have had. The feedback, suggestions, and critiques have made this a very strong “thing.”
In all, this project has been two year’s in the making, and at many times, I thought it would never reach this far. Part of the reason I announced this a year ago was so I could not get cold feet and not carry through. This was good thing, because every time I thought about saying, “I’m done. Not. Gonna. Do. It.” I pressed in.
Anyway, we are just about a week away, and I cannot wait till you know what I have been working on.
Reminder: Rouge Chat on G+
November 20 @ 7:00 PM on Google+ Hangout.
This will go no longer than a hour, at least for the first one.
Hope to see many of you there.
In which I plug. Or, another Kickstarter to back
Bruce Whitacre, who wrote Colonial Gothic: French & Indian War as well as The Defeated Dead, has a Kickstarter campaign underway. The campaign is for a game he has designed titled Coffin and Tombstones. In short the game is:
Coffins and Tombstones is the first in a series that Fearlight Games is going to produce. Powered by the Spectrum System, a ruleset that uses d6’s to determine the outcome of a character’s action; these are a set of miniatures skirmish games that are not tied to a specific set of miniatures, scale, genre, or setting. It does not use target numbers, but instead allows both players to make die rolls and then compare their numbers of successes.
I have always loved the Old West, and the game, from all the information on the Kickstarter page, and the website, looks to be in the sweet spot of rule complexity.
Anyway, if you want to back the project, here is the direct link:

I just backed it myself.
Monthly Rogue Games Chat on Google+
This is now a go.
The third Tuesday of every month is Rogue Games Chat. It will start at 7 PM CST, and last for at least 30 minutes. Every month this chat will take place, and if you cannot make it, the chat will be recorded and you can watch it at your leisure.
My plan is to have a topic every month, but this first chat is the shake down cruise if you will. This will be a little looser and have no topic, unless you want one.
Every month the chat will bring you up to date on what is going on, and it is a place to share ideas.
So mark your calendar, for:
November 20 @ 7:00 PM on Google+ Hangout.

In which I plug something I want to write
A couple of reasons:
1. It is done by Robin D. Laws, and the idea behind it is really good.
2. It is a different take on role playing games.
3. It can be used to run different types of settings.
And finally:
4. If it raises $3000 more, I will be contributing a pitch to Blood on the Snow: A DramaSystem Companion.
I really want to write this pitch, since it is for a game and a setting I have been kicking around for a few years. So if you like games, Robin D. Laws writing, or want to finally see Dolphin, this is your time to act.
To back this, visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robindlaws/hillfolk-dramasystem-roleplaying-by-robin-d-laws.
Celebrate Halloween with a Dice Box
This year, I decided to do something different.
What?
Create dice boxes.
I am serious.
Right now, you can purchase them at Drivethrurpg.com (click here), as well as RPGNow.com (click here).
The price? $.99. What do you get? A dice box shaped like a zombie, and a dice box shaped as a coffin. All you need to do is print them out on card stock, cut them out, and glue. Easy peasy.
So click on over, get yourself a copy, and have some fun this weekend.
Monthly Rogue Games G+ Chat Coming
The other day I posted a simple question to G+: What do you all think of a monthly Rogue Games chat via Google Hangouts?
I posted that to Twitter and Facebook as well. The response was overwhelming. I thought no one would care, but I was wrong. Everyone, to a person, expressed interest in this. So I am going to do this.
The first session will be next month, and my plans for this one is simple: A freeform discussion for about an hour. It will give me, and whoever chooses to stop by a chance to test out the whole thing. Once this shake out cruise is done, the following month -- December -- and every month after that, it will be discussion day. I will post the topic or topics, and that way, you know what is in store.
As for the date, and time, I am not sure yet. I want to make this as easy for people to take part, so I am shooting for a weekday, and probably around 7 PM CST. Speak up in the comments as too what times you would prefer, and I will see what I can do.
The last thing I need to look into is if there is a way I can record this whole thing, and post these on the Rogue Games' website, so people can download them if they cannot make the monthly discussion.
So there you go. I will have a date and time posted next week.
Thoughts are welcomed, and I am looking forward to doing this.
Rogue Games' products now for sale at Paizo.com
As of today, all our PDF products are now up for sale at Paizo.com. Right now it is all PDFs of our print titles. By next week all PDFs will be there. I then plan on uploading ePub files. Then by month’s end, I plan on having some of the print titles up for sale there as well.
So if you shop at Paizo.com you can now start getting our titles there as well. Here is the direct link.
Pre Order Colonial Gothic: Locations
FOUR TOWNS, MANY SECRETS

Plymouth, Massachusetts; Elizabethtown, Maryland; Savannah, Georgia; Charlotte Haven, Florida. Four towns that appear to have nothing in common. Four towns with secrets.
Award-winning author Jennifer Brozek takes you beneath the surface of four communities across Colonial America: the people, the societies, the secrets, and the things that were better left undiscovered.
Described in loving detail, each location is provided with a wealth of adventure seeds and campaign starts. Whether your Heroes are just visiting or decide to make a town their base of operations, you will find plenty here to provoke, challenge, and threaten them. There are wrongs to right, conspiracies to thwart, and monsters to slay. There are friends to help and foes to defeat. There are mystery, intrigue, and danger in plenty.
Just look beneath the surface.
This book contains revised and re-edited versions of Rogue Games' acclaimed Plymouth and Elizabethtown e-books -- in print for the first time -- plus two all-new locations: Savannah, the bustling capital of the young Georgia Colony, and Charlotte Haven, a small Florida town where a long Spanish heritage sits uneasily beneath the veneer of British rule.
Praise for Plymouth and Elizabethtown:

Colonial Gothic: Locations
RGG 1801 $21.99 ($7.99 eBook/PDF)
6x9 full color 174 pages
Due out October, 2012
Busy few weeks
Colonial Gothic: Locations is nearing completion. This is a big book – 274 pages – and will be in full color. The design of the book was what took a lot of time. I wanted the graphic look to be right, and I wanted it to enhance the great work Jennifer Brozek did in writing this. I hope that you will agree when you get to see it. I am shooting for a pre-order to go live by the weekend. Worse case it will go live next Monday. I should have the page for the book up by tomorrow as well.
Shadow, Sword & Spell will get my attention next. I need to get Companion is much better state. In addition I have a adventure I have been working on, that I want to get done. It is an island adventure, and It is my homage to the venerable, Isle of Dread. There are a few other things in the work for this, but nothing concrete yet.
Flames of Freedom: Shadows Upon The Hudson is moving out of rough draft. I will be writing this over the next month, and this will be out next year. I hit a road block with this – namely writer’s block – and nothing was clicking so I put this to rest for a while. I am glad I did because I feel much better about it.
Finally the 12/12/12 12:12:12 release is making the home stretch. The manuscript is now at the editor. The playtesting for the most part is done, and soon my work to make this into a book you will not forget begins. I have played this close to the vest, but when this is released on 12/12/12 12:12:12, you will be surprised.
In all, this is where things stand.
Preview of Locations
The death in my family rocked me for most of the month. Now that things have settled, work is picking up and I am fast at work on laying out Colonial Gothic: Locations.
Really.
Take a look:

Note that this is still a work in progress, but as you can see, the layout is coming along. I am shooting for this to be out the door sometime next week. All goes well, the preorder will go live and the books will be in your hands in no time.
This week, the info page will go up.
Things are moving, and I am finally at the end of the tunnel. I thank you for your patience.
Off-topic, a Kickstarter to support
I have been a huge fan of The Artifact RPG since it’s initial release. For my money, it has one of the things that I like, a hook.
I have never been a huge fan of science fiction. It just really never struck me, but I still try to find and play games that are in the genre in hopes that something will click.
The Artifact RPG is one of those games that have clicked, and still clicks with me.
The premise of the game is simple:
The Year is 2085 and long range teleportation technology has made faster than light travel possible, In an attempt to find habitable planets earth’s governments send out probes into deep space. They found something. . .Welcome to the Artifact, a world foreign to our own Earth in many ways. A world that was manufactured for some as yet unknown purpose. Here you will encounter hostile aliens like the Kelrath and the Chezbah, and those that will seek your aid, like the Scimrahn. Races that appear human but are different from us in many ways. Then there are those that hide in the shadows, like the giant Tanroc Fredar, and the thing called Loc, revered as a god by some, despised as a demon by others.
Source (http://www.theartifact.net/?page_id=5)
Anyway, they have launched a Kickstarter for a new edition of this game, and I really think, that if you like sci-fi games, this game has something different to offer. It has been free since it’s first release, and it has grown into a nice game. If you do not believe me, check out the review that The Free RPG Blog did (http://www.thefreerpgblog.com/2010/12/epic-science-fiction-homebrew-genius-in.html).
So if you feel like supporting a game that is unique, I hope you support this one.
Please not, I am not getting anything out of this. I simply really like this game, and would love to see it succeed with the Kickstarter.
Colonial Gothic: Locations
Updates have been few and far between, and I have been quiet about Rogue Games. Nothing major, or bad, just a lot of life issues have intruded upon my time. It stinks that things have slowed down, but sometimes you need to take a step back to get things done. Now that the personal stuff has been cleared up (sick father-in-law for those who are wondering) and my art school is winding down, I have more time.
One of the first things that will be out the door is a new Colonial Gothic release, Colonial Gothic: Locations.
Locations details four locations: three within the Thirteen Colonies, and one in the newly-acquired British territory of Florida. Each location is described in detail, with notes on its history, current inhabitants, and local mysteries and intrigues.
Plymouth was the seed from which the Massachusetts Colony grew. By the 1770s, it is a bustling town of some 3,000 souls. No longer dominated by Puritans, it is still a place where religion matters.
Elizabethtown in Maryland is both smaller and more recently founded. Named after the wife of founder Jonathan Hager and sometimes called Hagerstown, it is a bulwark against Indian attacks. Its population of 500 can increase fourfold when outlying colonists flee here from Lenape attacks.
Savannah was founded according to grander designs, as the capital of the Georgia colony. Its broad streets and open squares lend grace to this thriving port city.
Charlotte Haven is tiny by comparison. Along with the rest of Spanish Florida, it came into British hands after the French and Indian War, traded for the return of captured Cuba. British and Spanish colonists live side-by-side in a peace that is sometimes fragile; outside the small town, the Seminole and Calusa are known to give refuge to escaped slaves.
Each of these locations can be used as the base for a Colonial Gothic campaign, and each is treated in the same format. A brief history of the area sets the scene. Profiles of prominent local people provide a cast of NPCs. Local mysteries, secrets, and scandals are laid out with rumor and hearsay for the players and hard facts for the GM. Descriptions and statistics are given for local monsters as needed, and finally, a mini-campaign is laid out in skeleton form.
Colonial Gothic: Locations is written by Jennifer Brozek, and this is some of the best work she has done for Colonial Gothic. The book will be out in September. I am waiting on just one more map, and once that is done, the layout will be finished.

Kindle and ePub versions of Threats now ready
Visit the Online Store if you want to get a copy today.
Quick update
With Threats now out the door, finally, the backlog has been cleared, and the newer projects shift to the top of the list.
The first project is one for Colonial Gothic. Titled Locations, this will be a book that collects a few of Jennifer Brozek’s location PDFs, and include a new one. All these locations are ready to drop into your Colonial Gothic games, and are filled with a lot of cool little touches. Already a second location book is in the works. Another Colonial Gothic project coming up is the third part of Flames of Freedom. Work on this is moving along, and this will be out at year’s end.
As far as Shadow, Sword & Spell goes, Companion is on tap for the winter. This book has been worked on for a while, and it is going to be filled with cool little touches and new rule additions for your games.
Last but not least is the big release schedule for 12/12/12 @12:12:12. Playtesting for this has been going very well, and I am pleased with how this is turning out.
With the above you would think that would be enough, but I am kicking around ideas for a Shadow, Sword & Spell campaign, or at least more adventures. With the plate now being empty – in the sense of my time and distractions – I want to do more with the game and start exploring The World.
So there we go.
Shadow, Sword & Spell: Threats Ready For Pre Order

The World is a danger filled place.
Monsters lurk in the shadows waiting for the moment to strike upon the unsuspecting. The Jungles or Moran teems with threats both mundane and magical. Though most threats are from the physical world, there are many threats originating from nether realms.
Shadow, Sword & Spell: Threats is your guide to the dangers that lurk upon The World. Here you will find numerous monsters, and other dangers inspired by pulp fantasy and myth. Each monster is fully fleshed out, and ready to be used as is. For Gamemasters wanting to create their own unique creatures, new traits are introduced giving you more options in your own creations.
Beside threats of a more mundane sort, you will also find fully detailed threats that serve as the springboard for any campaign. From an ancient dragon who runs a cult, to a giant mustering forces so that he can control all trade through the mountain passes, to a group of thieves who use the cover of a bakery to profit in a special type of “dough,” Threats is your guide to the unique adversaries found in Shadow, Sword & Spell’s The World.
Grab your swords, summon your cohorts, and prepare yourself to face some of the most dangerous threats found in The World today!

Quick Update On A Few Things
All pre-orders for Colonial Gothic: The French & Indian War have been shipped. IPR will have their copies by this time next week.
Shadow, Sword & Spell: Threats is in layout and I am working on it. I hope to have this ready quickly with the pre-order going live soon. It hit a snag – artist did not finish their work and I had to get a new artist to do the work – but we are on track.
Working on the next installment of Flames of Freedom, and working on a summer release for Colonial Gothic.
Playtest for the 12/12/12’s release is humming along and I am really happy without it is going.
And the new quarter for art school started last week.
In all, I’ve been busy.

In which I am interviewed
Any way, I was interviewed by the podcast G*M*S Magazine a few weeks ago, and the interview has finally been posted. I really enjoyed the interview, and you can listen to it yourself, by clicking here.
Figures of Intrest for Colonial Gothic Fans
North Star has a sale on French Indian War figures, and though postage might be a bit high to get them to the US, the figures are pretty nice. I placed an order this morning for some. Here’s the link:

Some changes
In other news prices for some of the print books will be changing. I have held off as long as I can when it comes to keeping prices on the printed books low, but the fact of the matter is, it is costing me more to print the books with my printing partners. My unit costs have risen and in some cases I have lost money on the books. Over the next few weeks, prices will be changing as follows:
Colonial Gothic Line
- RGG 1776 Colonial Gothic: Rulebook (Old Price $24.99) -- New Price 29.99
- RGG 1779 Colonial Gothic: New France (Old Price $12.99) -- New Price 16.99

- RGG 1754 Colonial Gothic: The French and Indian War (Old Price $12.99) March 2012 -- New Price 17.99
Shadow, Sword & Spell Line

Forthcoming
- RGG 3030 Shadow, Sword & Spell: Threats (Old Price $12.99) February 2012 -- New Price $16.99

Colonial Gothic Organizations: The Templars Ready for Pre-Order

Available starting today Rogue Games is accepting pre-orders for Colonial Gothic Organizations: The Templars.
From Parzival through Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade to The da Vinci Code, the Knights Templar have had an enduring hold over the popular imagination. At dawn on Friday, October 13, 1307, they went from being one of the most powerful organizations in medieval Europe to prisoners and fugitives. They were questioned under torture and their leaders were executed for heresy. Officially disbanded in 1312, the Knights Templar ceased to exist.
The legend of the Templars has proved harder to destroy. Rumors persisted of hidden treasure, of a curse that blighted a dynasty, and of a secret so powerful that it threatened the very basis of the Church. New organizations such as the Freemasons looked back to the Templars, and became shrouded in myth and conspiracy theory themselves.
Written by Graeme Davis (Colonial Gothic: The Gazetteer) The Templars is the first in a series of Colonial Gothic sourcebooks covering secret societies and other organizations.
Within these pages you will find detailed and authoritative information on the activities of the Knights Templar in the world of Colonial Gothic, including their acknowledged and secret histories, their structure and organization, their goals in the Thirteen Colonies and around the world, and the implications of membership.
Although they do not show their hand openly, the Knights Templar remain a force in the world of Colonial Gothic. Their hand is seldom seen, but it pulls on many strings.

Coming Up This Month
Now that the holidays are over, it is time to kick things into gear. This is going to be a productive month, and there is a lot going on.
First up will be the printed version of Colonial Gothic: The Templars. The layout is done, and this will go up for pre-order next week. I am waiting for one batch of proofreading comments, and the cover is about 50% done. This is a nice little book, and for those who bought the original PDF/eBook release, will like the changes that have been made.
Edits for Shadow, Sword & Spell: Threats are in, and the art is coming in as well. I really like this book, and though I wish I got it done sooner, I think all the time I spent writing — and rewriting — it paid off.
Graeme is putting the finishing touches on Colonial Gothic: The French & Indian War book. I am working up page designs and I want to really make this book feel a little bit different.
If that was not enough, I will be recording the first real episode of Rogue Transmissions.
As you can see, busy month. Not on this list is a few of the things I am working out that will be coming out at year’s end. In all, it is going to be busy, but a fun time.
Busy. Busy. Busy.
You should notice one of them right now, the first test transmission for Rogue Transmission is up. You can download it over here.
When I have not been doing that – you do not know how many takes it took me for that small transmission – I’ve been layout out the print version of Colonial Gothic: The Templars. It will be going to the printer next week.
If that is not enough, I have been writing both Shadow, Sword & Spell: Companion and the next part of Flames of Freedom, Shadows Upon The Hudson. I hope to have some things to share for Companion next week.
If that was not enough to keep me busy, I moved to a new web host this week, and briefly the Rogue Games website was down. That is now done, and hopefully, the site is stable.
New bundle options for Flames of Freedom: The Philadelphia Affair
New bundle options for Flames of Freedom: The Philadelphia Affair has been uploaded. Now you can get the book, and your choice of PDF, ePub or Kindle. In addition, ePub and Kindle versions are ready for purchase as well. Visit the Online Store now.
New look to the Rogue Games website
I am sure there are some things that need tweaking, but I like the overall feel of the place.
The Online Store is next, that is going to be a major project. Why? Moving to a new shopping cart, and changing the entire look and feel of it. What you see now, is only temporally.
Some have asked, why do I change the look of the website so much. The reason, is that I have never been happy with how the site looked. The site has been a constant evolution when it comes to the presentation and layout. Organization is something that that I have never been pleased with. So as the months and years past, I tinker and tweak. I think this is like the eight iteration of the website, and I think I finally have come to a look a like.
Website Redesign: Step One is done
- Core
- Supplements
- Settings (if applicable)
- Adventures
- Fiction (if applicable)
Next up with be a reorganization of the information pages. This will be followed by building a new section which will be dedicated to the Rogue Games podcast I plan on starting the first of 2012. The last step will be rebuilding and redoing the entire online store.
Yeah, I sort of snuck that in there, didn’t I? There will be a monthly podcast starting the first of the year (2012). The plan is to use it as a place to talk about the games. I am still working out the details, but it will happen.
Website Redesign Coming
What will change is:
- Color Scheme
- Look
- Page Organization
Why is this taking place? There is a lot of information here, that needs to be organized.
Friday I will have a post about Shadow, Sword & Spell: Companion.
A change takes place
As of this morning, James and I are no longer business partners. There is no drama, no hard feelings, or any anger. We simply found ourselves at a cross roads, and our goals as designers were not the same goals we once had. In addition, the directions we wanted to go, were not the same, and as we always said, if we did not agree on something 100% we would not do it. So that we would have the freedom to do the projects we wanted, we decided that it was time go our separate ways.
So what does this mean?
Nothing.
Rogue Games is still here, will be here, and always will be here. James will just be doing his own thing with his own Grognardia Games. What that means is that Thousand Suns, The Cursed Chateau and the projects that were James’ will be coming out from his own company.
Colonial Gothic and Shadow, Sword & Spell will be coming out from Rogue Games.
I have known James for years, and have worked with him on many projects both with other game companies, and with Rogue Games. I wish him nothing but the best, and I cannot wait to see what he will be producing.
And to answer the question before it is asked: no, Rogue Games is not dead. As you can see there is a lot of product coming out next year, and the plans I have, as well as Graeme Davis has, is many. Many. What are these plans? That would be spoiling the surprises.
Coming March 2012: The French and Indian War
Colonial Gothic: The French and Indian War
A time when Washington was a militia colonel.

A time when Bostonians drank tea.
A time when the British were the good guys.
Welcome to a new era for Colonial Gothic, as the pages of history are tuned back to a time prior to the American Revolution. In The French and Indian War, players and gamemasters are presented with the tools and sources they need to run their games during this critical time of American history.
Join General Wolfe at the Siege of Quebec. Walk the woods with Hawkeye, Chingachgook and Uncas. Raid with Rogers' Rangers. Or pair this book with the New France sourcebook and fight to drive the British out of North America!
The French and Indian War includes historical background, new rules, adventure seeds, and game statistics for the leading personalities of the period 1754-1763.

Rogue Games welcomes you to Philadelphia
The Philadelphia Affair is the second chapter of the Flames of Freedom campaign. It follows Boston Besieged, which was nominated for a Gaming Genius (Golden Pawn) award in the Best Adventure category and won rave reviews from rpg.net, Roleplayers’ Chronicle, and elsewhere.
Written by Colonial Gothic creator Richard Iorio, The Philadelphia Affair, takes players into the City of Brotherly Love in the midst of the Second Continental Congress. As delegates struggle to forge a new nation out of thirteen fractious colonies, the hunt for a missing person leads to a deadly plot that could destroy the city and cripple the quest for independence.
Available in print and PDF formats, this 112-page book includes detailed source material on the history of Philadelphia and conditions in 1776. Kindle and ebook versions will be available shortly.
The Flames of Freedom campaign will continue in Shadows on the Hudson, which is scheduled for release in late 2012.

(Chicago) October 28, 2011: Rogue Games threatens you with Threats.

Shadow, Sword & Spell: Threats taught me a few things
So what is Threats? Is it a monster manuel type book? A collection of NPCs? A book helping you create monsters of your own? In order: yes, yes and yes.
Threats is a book I have thought about doing for awhile. I have always wanted to do a book that was focused on creating threats for players that a Gamemaster could pick up and run as is. I wanted a book that was more than just monsters, but animals, plants and the like. Plus I had some ideas for creature traits that I did not have when I was working on Basic and Expert.
So Threats is reaching the end. What will you find in it? Here’s a break down:
- Creatures of myth and legend
- Creatures inspired by Lovecraft
- Devils
- Demons
- New animals
- Plants and insects
- Unique creatures
- A few mercenary bands
- New creature traits
- A piece on effective creature design
So as the title of this post mentions, Threats taught me a few things. So what did I learn?
Patience. This book was hard to write, and not for reasons you think. Coming up with monsters and the like is easy. What is not easy is deciding which ones to include and which ones to drop. What is also hard is deciding on how you want to present information. There are many example of monster manuals, but what I could not find was something like what I wanted to do with Threats.
Threats also taught me when to pull back on detail. At times this book was turning into nothing more than details about The World, and because of this I lost the plot so to speak. So I went back, stripped it all out, and decided to rewrite the book. I rewrote the book five times. It was this process of rewriting that I hit on the perfect mix.
Threats is a good book. It will not change the world, but it is a book I am proud of. It has a lot of cool ideas, and the details I hint at about The World, really have inspired me to create more for this game. Which is a good thing, because I have a lot of ideas.
Update on Rogue Games Distribution
More details to come.
Coming Janurary 2011: The Knight Templars

Out January 2012
The Year to Come
At the end of said conversation we had rethought and remapped the release schedule between now and the end of next year. Said schedule is packed with some cool things. Counting Shadow, Sword & Spell, there are thirteen releases planned. If we take out the Shadow, Sword & Spell releases, we are looking at 11 new books for Colonial Gothic. Some of these books will be familiar, due to the fact they have existed as original PDFs.
We have decided that some of the older PDFs have been showing their age, and are in the process of reediting, and laying them out for print release. By doing this, we can now offer them to gamers who might have passed up on them due to their availability being as PDFs. So which PDFs are being promoted if you will? Here’s the list:
All three will be released throughout next year as new print books.
In addition, a few of the PDFs, will be added to upcoming releases. One of them, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, is going to see some major additions. Why? It is important to the first half of Flames of Freedom: Shadows on the Hudson. Some out there got a small taste of this in a few games I have run.
What else is in store? Some very cool things for the summer and winter of 2012. I do not want to spoil it all, but if you love this game, as much as I do, there will be some cool releases which will make you very happy. Looking ahead to 2013 (yeah that far) I know there is at least one book I am writing due out in January 2013.
When I look at Shadow, Sword & Spell, Threats will be out the start of the year, and Companion at the end of the year. As for the middle of the year? Something is coming.
So why have things been a little slow as of late? Life has stepped in the way. The summer was very rough, and a bout of sickness slowed me down. Now that it is over, and a lot of the hurdles have been cleared, things are coming back online. One of the big changes is that Rogue Games will be taking over distribution of our own titles. Come January 1, 2011, we will no longer be represented by Studio 2. As a result of this, I’ve been busy signing with distributors to insure that our games are available, and that no delays happen. How has this gone? I am happy to report very good. I am heartened at the responses I have gotten, and who have decided to pick us up.
January 2012 is going to be a big year for Rogue Games. There is a lot planned and a lot of surprises in store for you through out the year. Have no doubt, that the countdown to 12-12-12 12:12:12 is no joke. Those who know what is coming, are very happy. :)
So that is where things stand. Over the next week I will have posted the schedule for the next six months.
Thank you for your patience and thank you for your support.

Containment RPG Kickstarter

"At the present moment in world history nearly every nation must choose between alternative ways of life. The choice is too often not a free one.
One way of life is based upon the will of the majority, and is distinguished by free institutions, representative government, free elections, guarantees of individual liberty, freedom of speech and religion, and freedom from political oppression.
The second way of life is based upon the will of a minority forcibly imposed upon the majority. It relies upon terror and oppression, a controlled press and radio; fixed elections, and the suppression of personal freedoms.
I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures.
I believe that we must assist free peoples to work out their own destinies in their own way."
-- President Harry S Truman, Speech to a Joint Session of the United States Congress (12 March 1947)
The Second World War has ended and a war for the world has begun, a war fought not with armies and fleets but in the shadows and whose battle lines are not clearly drawn. Two years ago, Germany and Japan were the enemies and the USSR an ally, but times change and the West now turns to former Nazis and their expertise in a bid to stop the red tide of Communism from washing across the world.
Written and designed by Richard Iorio II (Colonial Gothic & Shadow, Sword & Spell) and James Maliszewski (Thousand Suns), Containment harkens back not just to an earlier time in world history but also to an earlier time in the roleplaying hobby, when games came complete and ready-to-play in a single box. Containment therefore includes the following:
- Rulebook: All the rules needed for play.
- Gamemaster’s Book: Everything the GM needs for play: world background, campaign advice, character advancement rules, adventure creation guidelines, and sample threats.
- 2 Adventures (one a straight up espionage adventure, and the other set in the occult conspiracy)
- Dice
If this Kickstarter project succeeds, Rogue Games will not only publish this boxed set, but keep it in print for others to enjoy. Further support for the game, in the form of sourcebooks and adventures, may appear in the future, if there is sufficient interest. If successful, Containment will be released in the following formats:
- Boxed Set (includes everything mentioned above)
- PDF version (includes everything but the dice)
- eBook version of the game (includes everything but the dice)
Here is a breakdown of the proposed budget for the project:
- Printing is the estimated cost of printing approximately 500 copies of the boxed set.
- Shipping and Handling is the expected total cost of packing, shipping, and handling to send the boxed set to supporters, based on past sales and fundraisers.
- Writing & Graphic Design goes to Richard & James (the writers) and Richard (Graphic Designer), to pay them for work they have done, and continue to do, in creating the games Rogue Games publishes.
Rogue Games believes that a complete, boxed roleplaying game is neither a thing of the past nor an expensive pipe dream and asks your help in making Containment possible.
To help us make this possible, visit here to see the reward levels.
In the days to come, James and I will have more information and be vocal during the design process. This is something that we have always wanted to do, a box set, so this is our chance to make this happen.
To back the project visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ri2/containment-the-rpg.
Thousand Suns Revised Preview
Preorders for this should be ready no later than next week, maybe sooner.
Enjoy the look, and James will be posting about the revision some more.
Thousand Suns Revised Preview
So, what do you think? Looks good huh?
The Countdown Has Begun
Updates to what is on tap
When James and I started this, we never thought we would be here this long. It is not that we doubted what we could do, or the type of games we wanted to not only design, but play. It is just a simple fact that publishing games is a high risk proposition. One mistake can cost you, and no matter how good you think your games, design and products are, if the gamer does not like it, then they will not buy it. It is not small fact that we have made it this long, and though we have made our share of mistakes, we have learned from them, and continue learning from them. So from James and myself, thank you for allowing us to do what we enjoy.
Ok, so that is out of the way, let’s get to the update.
With August coming to an end, four more months ahead of us, what do we have in the works?
- Flames of Freedom: The Philadelphia Affair: This will be out in time for Halloween. I know it has taken longer than we thought, but this is a massive adventure and is set in Philadelphia. It is a direct tie into Boston Besieged, and if you thought the plot that debuted in that book was a throw away, you are in for a surprise. This is a big book. Half devoted to source material on the most important city of the colonies, and the second half a sprawling, multi-layered adventure set throughout, under, and around this great city. Be warned this is a tough adventure, both in threats and structure. No bull. Anyway, the adventure is going into its final proofing stage, maps are being finished, and the layout is about to begin.
- Shadow, Sword & Spell: Threats: If all goes well this will be out year end. I have rewritten this book twice, and the third time is the charm. What does it contain? Well Threats. :)
Information on the website will appear shorty about the above.
- Thousand Suns Revised: In its’ final stages. This is a James product, and by that, unless he is happy, the book is not ready. :) It has been gone over with a fine tooth comb. This is well worth the wait. I know we have been slow, but trust me, it is not because we were not working on it.
Next year will see a lot of cool things. Graeme Davis, James and myself have some very cool things we have been working on. In addition, mark your calendar now for 12-12-12 12:12:12. For those with poor eyesight, that is December 12, 2012 at 12:12:12 PM. Something big will be released on this day, and that is all I will say now.
As always, thank you for allowing us to do this. We hope we are keeping you happy.

It looks even better in person.
Rogue Games puts Shadow, Sword & Spell: Under Pashuvanam’s Lush up for Pre Order
Beidha.
The name invokes wonderment. It fuels the imagination of storytellers. It fills merchants with a lust for riches.
Covering most of this land is a thick jungle called the Pashuvanam, or Jungle of Beasts. The jungle deserves its name. Fierce monsters and animals plague Beidhanids and Nipuans alike, sometimes destroying entire villages. Over the last few centuries, most of the dangerous creatures have been driven away from major settlements and main roads, giving the inhabitants a sense of security. Still, stories of unspeakable horrors lurking in the jungle’s depth persist—and are regularly proven true.
Under Pashuvanam’s Lush is your introduction to this land. Here you will find adventure, rumor and mysteries. This adventure takes the heroes from the civilization of this land, through the dark foreboding jungles to ruins long forgotten.
What evil lurks under the lush?
Written by Gabriel Brouillard (Colonial Gothic: New France), Under Pashuvanam's Lush is a departure from our regular books. Why? Not only is it full color, but it opens up a new culture for play. More than just an adventure, this is a sourcebook for the kingdom of Beidha, allowing gamemasters and players to adventure in the jungles and lands of an ancient culture's remains.
